Burrowing Owl AllianceAbout Us

Mission Statement

The Burrowing Owl Alliance (BOA) was created to connect multi-jurisdictional organizations of ornithologists, biologists, ecologists, and conservationists across Canada who are addressing the ongoing decline of Burrowing Owls through recovery and conservation efforts. BOA is focused on collaborative initiatives guided by the relevant government recovery documents and the Alliance’s membership recommendations.

Objectives

The Alliance membership shares conservation planning initiatives for Burrowing Owl recovery throughout their respective regions in Canada.

The Alliance's goals are to:

  • Increase awareness of Burrowing Owl conservation status throughout its range.
  • Identify knowledge gaps and develop priorities for coordinated Burrowing Owl research and management.
  • Contribute to regional conservation action plans and recovery strategies for the Burrowing Owl in Canada, and North America.
  • Share regional challenges, and successes and use shared experiences to improve
    conservation initiatives on the ground.
  • Grow the network to engage U.S. and Mexican organizations and individuals working on recovery efforts for burrowing owls.
  • Create a forum for all members to share information, scientific publications, and conservation action follow-through

Long-term and short-term goals

Every region will provide historical population estimates and moving forward, will provide a minimum number of estimates/species observations annually to better understand regional and national population status’ (stable, increasing, or declining).
