Welcome to Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre

The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) originated in 1996, and opened its doors to the public in July 1997. Our initial goal was to raise public awareness about the local Burrowing Owls, as well as some of the conservation efforts being undertaken to help protect them.

Over the years, our mandate has evolved to promoting the Burrowing Owls and prairie conservation through education, eco-tourism and stewardship. The Centre is open to the public from the May to September long weekend. We offer in-house tours where visitors can learn about the Burrowing Owls in our display area and then have the opportunity to view our parliament of BUOWs which are part of our permanent collection. The Centre also has a year- round traveling, outreach program known as Owls on Tour which is highlighted by the involvement of hand-raised ambassador owls. Over the years the Centre has added a Short- Eared Owl and several Richardson ’s ground squirrels to our permanent population to help highlight the unique and diverse wildlife found here on the Canadian Prairies.

While our main goal is to educate the public about the Burrowing Owls and our prairie wildlife, we are also looking towards the future with the hopes of seeing a self-sustaining wild population of Burrowing Owls returning to their historical range in Canada.
